Aesthetics of Sustainability
Aesthetics of Sustainability
This book presents the outcomes of "The Aesthetics of Sustainability," a research project led by ECAL/École cantonale d’art de Lausanne. The initiative brought together master’s students in product design, along with materials specialists, manufacturers, and researchers, to explore and define the aesthetic potential of a new generation of sustainable materials.
The project resulted in fourteen case studies focused on developing materials derived from sources such as textile waste, recycled paper, rubber granulate, and natural fibres like algae, rice husks, hemp, flax, and wood. These materials can be shaped, pressed, woven, or welded, offering diverse possibilities for design. The book showcases a selection of these materials through experiments and product prototypes.
The goal is to equip future designers with practical tools and applied knowledge for analysing and processing innovative materials, maximising their beneficial properties, and creating functional yet visually compelling objects. Additionally, the materials highlight the market potential of sustainable solutions for manufacturers and consumers alike.
Contributors include Christophe Guberan, Chris Lefteri, Ala Tannir, and graduates of ECAL’s Master’s Program in Product Design.
